An ideal home for me would be able to patiently teach me my puppy manners and spend time making sure that I get good exercise so I can grow up strong and healthy. I used to live on the streets of Houston and I was pretty sad about it. It's a hard life for a mellow pup like me. I kept waiting for a rescuer to find me but it was hard to be patient, so one day, I decided to find my own rescuer. She came over and crouched down to give my ears a scratch and I gave her my paw. I'm a gentleman, you see, and I thought that a good paw shake would let her know that I needed a rescuer. Well lucky for me, she speaks the same language, and she knew just what I needed. She gently put a leash on me and lifted me into her car and we were off. Aren't I so clever? I was taken to the vet, where I was given all my shots. I was already neutered, so there's been no funny business from me in terms of knowing to go potty outside. I have met several male and female dogs of different sizes and personalities and I am very polite and even a little submissive to them. I am just so grateful to be given a second chance! I walk well on a leash and I don't scarf my food. I even know how to 'kennel up' and I like the safety and warmth of my crate and blanket. Because I am so gentle and mellow, my rescuers say that I would probably be good in a home with little humans too -- hopefully I'll get to meet some soon! I might look a little big in my photos, but that's just a camera trick (you know what they say about cameras adding pounds!). I am actually only 40 lbs and I stand about the height of you knee. (Read More)interaction with other dogs, but I love to play with her. When we go for walks, I'm OK with the other dogs, so I'd probably get along in a multi-dog household. However, animals smaller than dogs, such as squirrels and cats usually realize it is a good idea to run away from me. I have mostly been kept outside, but I do go into my foster Dad's workshop at night and I have learned not to make a mess. I haven't had a lot of training up to this point (I was rescued from a very horrible situation), but my foster parents both say that I am very intelligent, and will learn very quickly once someone is around who can show me what I should do. I really do want to please. I'm a little more than 1 yr. old and fully grown, weighing in at about 35-40 lbs, so I'm pretty muscular, despite having very short legs. My foster mom says I am house trained and crate trained. I impress my foster mom with my puppy manners, and know how to sit, lay down, and roll over on command. Hi, my name is JD! I am a sweet, affectionate boy with quite a story to tell! You see, I was found on the side of the road in Houston. Emaciated, dehydrated, injured and defeated. I was picked up by a good samaritan and taken to the city pound to be euthanized. The workers there did not even bother to take me into intake b/c they knew I would not make it much longer. But they gave me one last shot. They sent out a plea to area rescues asking for help. And that's where my life changed. Red Collar Rescue got the email and were at the pound within the hour. They took me straight to the emergency room. They gave me pain medicine and tried to ... (Read More)assess my injuries. I was just skin and bones, covered in fleas and mange. My eyes were sunken in and I had a gaping open wound on my leg. I also had two dislocated hips and fractured spine and pelvis. My temperature was low, I was in shock and my body was shutting down. The doctors did not give me much hope. The RCR volunteers sat w/ me for a while and then tucked me in for the night - not sure if I would make it through the night. But what they and the doctors didn't know is that I was no ordinary dog. My body was weak but I have the heart of a lion. And every day I surprised every one - getting stronger and working so hard to get well. After two weeks in the hospital, I was taken to my medical foster home. My guardian angels there took care of me day and night, cleaning my wounds, giving me lots of good food and love. I soaked up the attention, I wasn't giving up and neither were they! When I was healthy enough, I had two hip surgeries to repair my injured joints. And look at me now!!! I am a healthy 60 lbs now, about 2 years old and absolutely stunning. I have a great sense of humor, am very affectionate and when I'm happy, my whole body wags! I love to lay in the grass, take walks and be the center of attention.
